Introducing Myself is Hard... Hi, I'm Hannah

Hi, my name is Hannah Hoffman. I am a Psychology and Religious Studies major at OU. I am often asked what I intend to do with that combination of majors and I never really know how to answer that question. I find both subjects really interesting and enjoy trying to understand why people think the things they do and what people value. I am graduating this semester and I'm only a little nervous about the lack of plans and career goals I still have at this point. I'll be working at a camp this summer and that's about as far ahead as I have thought out so far. (For information about my amazing summer job see my favorite place post.)

I took Myth & Folklore last semester and I really enjoyed being able to learn without stressing about grades. I also took a class on Hinduism last semester where we talked about the epics so I'm super excited to being taking an entire class on them this semester.

I am from Houston, Texas (Kingwood to be more specific if you know the area). In my spare time I enjoy singing, playing guitar, watching TV, reading and playing with my dog, Meeko (she is named after the raccoon in my Disney favorite movie, Pocahontas).

My dog Meeko

To conclude here is a list of other random fun facts about me.
  • My favorite TV show is New Girl
  • My favorite book is Love Does by Bob Goff (highly recommend it to anyone who has time to read it).
  • My favorite food is lasagna or any type of pasta to be honest.
  • I drink a scary amount of tea on the regular. (See my tea stash below)
  • The Houston Astros are my favorite pro sports team
  • I can't raise my pinky finger at all without lifting my ring finger

  1. Hi Hannah! I'm also from the Houston area (Katy). I wish I had your ability to not worry so much about the future - I feel the need to plan everything out and make sure everything is going as expected, so that can be stressful. I really liked Love Does by Bob Goff! It's such a good book, and I sometimes wish I could be as spontaneous as him. I'm sure things will work out for you, good luck this semester!

  2. Hi Hannah,

I also have a psychology degree, but I think you knew that because you read my introduction. I’m not a religious studies major, but my relationship with Christ is really important to me. If you are interested in therapy, there is such a thing as Christian centered therapy. Maybe you could use both of your degrees for that.

    Your dog is super cute!

I also think you picked a really unique design for your blog. Its giving me these edgy vibes, and I love it

My dad loves green tea. He probably drinks about a gallon of gyokuro (a Japanese green tea) every day for its health benefits. Do you drink tea with milk?

  3. Hey Hannah, I am originally from Louisville, Kentucky but have lived in Edmond, Oklahoma for awhile. I am a huge fan of music, sadly I am tone deaf and have never done much singing. I tried to learn guitar once, but I was never able to get the hang of it. Freshman year here at OU one of my friends taught me some basic songs on piano. I am also a big fan of pasta in general. I have never had any tea to drink though, and have never been a big fan of coffee. I only occasionally drink energy drinks. I would also like to hear your thoughts on the recent Astros cheating scandal. Nice to meet you.

  4. Hiya Hannah, first off let me start by saying that lasagna is the PEAK of all foods. I'll always miss coming to college and not having mom's home-made lasagna. I think it's awesome that you like to focus on why people think the things they think and like the things they like. Learning the processes that make us who we are is extremely interesting. I hope you have an awesome time at camp over the summer. Some of my best memories are from being a camper, sadly I didn't have the chance to come back as a camp counselor.

  5. Hi Hannah,
Very cool majors indeed. Also, I love New Girl. I have only seen epsidoes of it just becuase I don't have Netflix, but it's funnyyyyy! As always your dog is adorable, what type of dog is it? When I read about you not being able to move your pinky without moving your ring finger, I actually sat here and tried it out. For me, ever since I was little, I held all cups and bottles with my pinky up haha! It feels weird with it down now.

I hope you enjoy the class!

  6. Hi Hannah! I just now realized I never got around to responding to your Introduction this semester... so: hello! again! And hello again to Meeko too! As you can guess, it's always so cool having Religious Studies majors in these classes. I approach things from a storytelling point of view... but religion has been the occasion for much of the storytelling throughout human history, especially in a place like India, which is home to so many religious traditions, which all have their own stories. And I love this picture of your tea stash...... wow! I see at least one chai there, which is of course one of India's gifts to the world. I am a fan of cardamom chai from Nature's Guru... not that you need any more tea to add to your collection. But if you are looking for more, ha ha, I can recommend it. :-)

  7. Hello Hannah. Wow, that is a unique combination of majors but I bet that you will find something very interesting to do with that. I also think it is very interesting to understand the different motivations of people’s beliefs and thoughts. Also, it is fine not knowing for sure what you are going to do. You can learn what you want to do even while you are working somewhere. What is important is finding something you love doing.

  8. Hi Hannah!
That sounds like a very interesting choice of majors that will keep your mind very occupied! I have always thought that psychology is such a cool subject. Your dog Meeko is so cute! The hardest thing about leaving home for me is having to leave my dogs behind for a few weeks. Also, wow that's a lot of tea!

  9. Hello Hannah, so nice to meet you!! I am also a Psychology major, maybe we've even had classes together! I LOVE New Girl! Fun fact, I binged New Girl for the first time during finals week my sophomore year, wasn't the best idea lol! I am also a big pasta fanatic and even learned how to make homemade pasta when I studied abroad! Also, very impressed with your tea collection (even though I'm more of a coffee girl myself!).

  10. Hey Hannah!

I focused far too much on your fun fact about your pinkie. You can't lift it at all without moving the finger next to it? Wow.
It sounds like this class should be very exciting for you. I'm pretty excited about it, and we are already a quarter of the way through the semester! Meeko looks very friendly! In my experience, dogs are always so friendly and happy that they're clearly the best possible pet.
    It's nice to meet you!

  11. Howdy Hannah, I think that’s a really interesting major pairing. Those two would go hand in hand I’d think as you’re seeing more about people’s operations and motivations, while also learning about the institutions of which they choose to be a part. I am extremely jealous of your tea cabinet, mine is ever evolving, but has yet to reach those heights. Best of luck post-graduation.

  12. Hi Hannah!

Um, it's really weird that we have so much in common! I LOVE new girl and my favorite food is lasagna as well. Except literally nothing will ever top my mom's lasagna. Drinking tea is one of my favorite things to do and it's also my cure to almost anything. But, my tea collection is not nearly as much as yours. The weirdest thing we have in common is the pinky thing. My right pinky doesn't have it's uppermost joint, so I cat lift that up without lifting my ring finger as well. It also doesn't bend properly, LOL.

  13. Hey Hannah!
First of all, cool major choice! Your career path was definitely a big question I had when I read your majors, so thanks for addressing that first haha! I am definitely a huge believer in the study-what-you-love-and-the-money-will-follow philosophy so huge props for sticking with those! I also think that Psychology is really widely applicable (even things like HR or PR would be good for psych majors!), even if you don't always use your religious studies degree. Anyway good luck with this class and I can't wait to read your stories!

  14. Hi Hannah!

    Hi Hannah!
I think your majors seem fascinating! I’m glad you chose studies that your passionate about over anything else, I think that’s the most important thing about picking a career. Since we’re a bit further into the semester now, I hope you’ve started feeling less nervous about graduating! Your dog Meeko is precious and I absolutely adore her tie-dye bandana!

  15. Hi, Hannah!

Psych and Religious Studies makes sense to me. People don't like to admit how much our religious beliefs unconsciously affect everything around us. How do you feel about Philosophy and Rhetoric studies? I think that they are just as important to religious studies as psychology is.

I love your dog! He looks so cool. Does he sing with you? My dog hides in her cage when I play my guitar and sing. I don't blame her. My guitar skills are not that great.

    Thanks for sharing!

  16. Hi Hannah! I'm also a Psych major! I'm graduating this semester, but I think the Psych department at OU is great! I don't know if you've had Dr. Carol Terry yet, but I definitely recommend taking classes with her. It's also cool that you're a religious studies major. Religion is so different in many cultures and it offers so much guidance to people. Your dog Meeko is adorable too and I wish I could raid your tea collection! Good luck with this semester!

  17. Hello Hannah! It must be so exciting that you are almost done with college. I think I still have about 4 full semesters left! I also played guitar for a time and considered going to school for it. Alas, I developed a love for science (of all things) and here I am finishing my degree in chemistry. Thanks for sharing a picture of your dog. She is super adorable!

  18. HI Hannah!
That tea stash is phenomenal. I go through phases with tea. There a points in the year I drink four to six cups a day. Then there are day like today where I only drink coffee haha. I do not have as much tea as you, but I am the type to go into a grocery store and want to buy all the teas. Especially medical teas. I love holistic and natural approaches to health so trying medical teas always proves exciting. Awesome introduction and I hope you have a great semester.

  19. Hey Hannah!
I think your major and minor combo is definitely interesting. I haven't met anyone with a minor in religious studies but I love talking about religion personally! I think there are so many layers to religion and more than that, there are so many types, some so different from each other, that the content is endless. I currently have a business minor but I am thinking of changing it to psychology. If you have any ideas of what minor would be great for a premed student lmk!

  20. Hi Hannah! Your dog is super adorable! Thanks for including a picture! My roommate this year is also a huge tea drinker and we have a whole shelf in our apartment dedicated to her tea. I'm more of a coffee person myself, but caffeine is caffeine! The camp you work at looks like SO MUCH FUN! I'm so jealous! Hopefully COVID-19 won't mess up your plans too badly. Good luck with the rest of the semester! (lord knows we all need some good luck)

  21. Hello again Hannah!

I have to comment on your MASSIVE TEA COLLECTION. I am in love with chai tea and chai lattes, and that was the first thing I saw in your photo. I bet you're the guru of all things tea and to be honest, I've been trying to become acquainted with more of them lately. As a matter of fact, I'm drinking a traditional Jasmine green tea right now. I'd love to know what some of your favorites are. :-)
